A Reflection from New Beginnings Foundation
“Every building or properties we get involved in, should always be accessible not only to those with prosthetics but to anyone who has any kind of physical challenges in their lives — from children to the elderly like me! You all don’t understand how the needs of the elderly are ignored in most housing projects! It is better in the USA… but still more awareness is needed! I am not talking only ramps and lifts…. but inside the apartments — the kitchens, bathrooms, windows, laundry rooms, light switches and outlets and closets…. realistic accessibility needs to be put in place! So as renovations are going on in New Beginnings think of meeting with some physically challenged people and getting their input before the final touches are put in place!”
A Founder’s Call to Action
These words come from one of New Beginnings Foundation’s elder founders, a naturalized immigrant
from Eritrea whose wisdom reminds us that true progress means designing for everyone. Her voice calls attention to an often-overlooked truth: accessibility is not a feature—it’s a standard of dignity.
The Vision: Reimagining the 52-Unit Rehabilitation Project
At New Beginnings, her message has become the heartbeat of our next major undertaking—a
complete rehabilitation of a 52-unit apartment complex in Baton Rouge. Every blueprint, fixture, and layout is being revisited through her lens of compassion and realism.
We’re working to ensure:
- Accessible Kitchens: Lowered counters and cabinets, front-control ranges, and side-opening
- ovens.
- Thoughtful Bathrooms: Walk-in showers with benches, grab bars, and slip-resistant flooring.
- Everyday Functionality: Light switches, outlets, and shelves at reachable heights for children,
- wheelchair users, and elders alike.
- Community Input: Partnering with local residents and advocacy groups for the physically
challenged to co-design spaces that empower independence.
Why It Matters
Our founder’s words remind us that inclusion isn’t about compliance—it’s about compassion. She
knows what it feels like to navigate spaces not made for her body, and yet she envisions a future where every doorway, switch, and step tells a story of care.
At New Beginnings Foundation, we are turning her reflection into action. Because the promise of “new beginnings” should belong to everyone.
